What Happened at Amber Hills

The Problem

A customer in the Amber Hills neighborhood called Rhinox after the remote on their 2009 Chevy Impala stopped responding entirely. The 5-button GM remote — which controls lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and remote start — had been working fine until one morning it simply went dark. New battery, same result.

After the battery swap failed to fix it, the customer suspected the remote had lost sync with the car's Body Control Module (BCM). This is a common issue on 2009 GM vehicles when the battery is deeply discharged, the BCM is reset, or a remote is inadvertently deleted from the system. The fix requires an OBD-II programmer — you cannot resync these remotes through a button sequence on the 2009 Impala.

What We Did

Our tech arrived in Amber Hills in 28 minutes. A quick inspection confirmed the remote body was intact and the fresh battery was reading good voltage. We connected our Autel MaxiIM OBD-II programmer to the diagnostic port under the steering column, selected the 2009 Chevrolet Impala from the vehicle database, and cleared all stored remote IDs from the BCM.

With the slate clean, we re-enrolled the customer's existing remote. The entire programming sequence took under 15 minutes. We tested all 5 buttons — lock, unlock, trunk release, panic alarm, and remote start — before closing out the job. Customer paid on-site. No dealer visit, no towing.
