If you're asking 'do I need a panic bar on this door and will it pass inspection?', here's the short answer: it depends on your occupancy type, door count, and local fire code — but ADA compliance rules are federal and apply everywhere, including every commercial building in Las Vegas. Get those two things wrong and you're looking at a failed inspection, a fine, or a lawsuit. What the ADA actually requires on exit hardware
The ADA Accessibility Standards are published by the U.S. Access Board and carry the force of federal law for places of public accommodation and commercial facilities. Section 404 covers doors and gates. Here's what matters for panic bars specifically.
- Operation: hardware must be operable with one hand and must not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. A panic bar — push-to-open across the full width — satisfies this. A knob does not.
- Force: the maximum force to operate a door hardware component is 5 lbf (pound-force) for interior doors. Fire doors have a separate allowance under NFPA 80.
- Height: hardware must be mounted no lower than 34 inches and no higher than 48 inches above the finished floor — measured to the operable part.
- Clear floor space (Section 305): a 30" × 48" clear floor space is required on the pull side of the door, positioned so a wheelchair user can approach and operate the hardware without obstruction.
- Maneuvering clearance: Section 404.2.4 sets the maneuvering clearance dimensions based on door approach direction and whether the door swings toward or away from the user.
Here's the part most people don't know: ADA does not require panic bars. It requires accessible hardware. A panic bar happens to be the easiest way to meet the one-hand, no-grip standard on high-traffic exits. That's why you see them everywhere from a Henderson strip mall to a casino loading dock.
Fire safety codes and building codes: where the IBC comes in
ADA handles accessibility. The International Building Code (IBC) and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code handle when you are required to install a panic bar — regardless of accessibility. Clark County and the City of Las Vegas both adopt the IBC. Key triggers:
- Occupant load of 50 or more in a Group A, E, H, or I occupancy: panic hardware (also called 'crash bars' or 'exit devices') is required on all egress doors.
- Group H occupancies (high-hazard): panic hardware required regardless of occupant load.
- Any door in an exit enclosure or exit passageway serving more than 49 occupants requires a listed panic device.
- NFPA 101 Section 7.2.1.7 mirrors the IBC thresholds and adds requirements for delayed-egress locks, which must include an audible alarm and a 15-second maximum delay on most occupancies.
- Nevada State Fire Marshal regulations reference NFPA 101; your local fire inspector has final say on any variance.
Bottom line: if you own a restaurant on Flamingo with a 60-seat dining room, every exterior egress door needs a panic device. Your contractor or fire inspector will cite IBC 1010.1.10 if you show up with a lever set.
Hardware specifications: what a compliant panic bar actually looks like
Not every push-bar you find at a hardware wholesaler is code-compliant. Here's what to look for when sourcing hardware for a Las Vegas commercial door project.

All devices installed on fire-rated assemblies must be UL-listed for that rating. The door, frame, hardware, and closer must all carry matching ratings. A UL-listed panic bar on a non-rated door does not make the assembly fire-rated. We see this mistake on older Spring Valley commercial buildings more than anywhere else in the valley.
Location and height: mounting a panic bar to pass inspection in Henderson or North Las Vegas
The ADA Accessibility Standards set the 34"–48" mounting window. In practice, most rim devices are mounted with the touchpad centerline at 40"–42" — comfortable for standing adults and reachable from a wheelchair. Here's what installers get wrong:
- Mounting too high: some installers set the top of the device at 48", which puts the operable touchpad above the 48" limit if the device is taller than a few inches. Measure to the touchpad center, not the top rail.
- Blocking the clear floor space: signage, mop buckets, or furniture placed within the required 30" × 48" clear floor zone on the push side will fail an ADA site review.
- Wrong backset: a panic device has to be set to the door's backset (typically 2-3/8" or 2-3/4"). Wrong backset and the latchbolt won't engage the strike cleanly.
- Strike placement: the strike must be aligned so the latchbolt retracts fully with a single push of 5 lbf or less. Test this with a calibrated force gauge before signing off.

When NOT to hire us — and when a locksmith isn't the right call
We do panic bar installations on commercial doors. We do not do new door frame fabrication or structural work. If your egress door opening is the wrong width (ADA requires a minimum 32" clear width under Section 404.2.3), you need a contractor to frame and hang a new door before any locksmith touches the hardware. Same goes for hollow-core residential doors — a panic bar isn't rated for that application and no inspector will pass it. Call your general contractor first, then call us for the hardware.
Also: if your building is in a historic district near the Strip or downtown, structural changes to egress doors may require a variance. That's a permit office conversation, not a locksmith conversation.

Panic devices are exit-only by default — they don't control who enters. Most commercial installs pair the panic device with a mortise or cylindrical lock on the exterior, a card reader, or a keypad.
